The Tome Ep 220: Building Encounter and Party
Nov 28th, 2009 by TheTome
This advice episode is turned on it's head. Phil "Chatty DM" Menard joins me from the great state...er, country of Canada this time around. But instead of building a PC and giving some DM advice we build an encounter for my personal campaign and give some advice on building a cohesive party.

This has been one of the most enjoyable podcasting experiences I’ve had. I love talking about designing encounters and helping players create a more cohesive party. Thanks for the invite Jeff.
You might want to fix the post title… Or did you really do 100 other podcasts between releases?
What? You didn’t get those 100 episodes? You’re really missing out, they were probably the best thing I’ve ever heard or done.
This was the best episode of the tome ever, the discussion of monster roles and how they interact and SHOULD work together can be tough to get, and ChattyDM hit it right on the head. More Artillery, fewer soldiers!
Jeff’s comment for players to “Say Yes” like DMs is some of the best advice I’ve heard in a while for party construction.
Kudos to both of you.
Thanks for the kind words.
I get such positive feedback about the advice eps that I think I’m going to do them more often. I previously did them every 5th episode, but I’m going to start trying to do them once a month, I think.
Great Episode Jeff & Phil! I listened this morning, and I have to say, this is one of the best Tome episodes ever. Plus, it couldn’t have come at a better time for me. I’m just about to hop back into the DM chair for our group, and 4e encounter design is still something I’m having a bit of trouble with. When I listened to you guys, a lot of stuff started to click in my head. I can’t wait to try out some of the design stuff you were talking about when I sit down to write my encounters. Keep up the good work!
Just have to agree with everyone else: the best episode of the Tome yet.
