The Tome Ep 122: Draconomicon Metallic Dragons
Dec 25th, 2009 by TheTome
Dave Chalker and Quinn Murphy join me to talk about Draconomicon: Metallic Dragons. We tend to like the book although think that one chapter (Dragon Lairs) was lacking in creativity.

The advice episodes are great, especially the last one. I’m definitely in favor of an advice show per month.
Great show overall. Always look forward to the next.
If I might offer some advice, do yourselves a favor and download Levelator. When I listen to the show, the various personalities on the show have audio levels all over the board.
For example, Jeff is quiet on this episode and varies quite a bit. So if I turn up the volume to listen to him, then I get blasted by the next guy.
Levelator evens out your audio levels. I’ve downloaded the Tome before and ran it through Levelator, and it sounds MUCH better.
Anyway, just wanted to pass that along. I like the content, but a little work on the audio production will make the show even better. If you have any questions about Levelator, let me know.
Thanks!
Yeah, I’m quite familiar with Levelator and have used it in the past. I haven’t used it recently, however, and this is the second time someone has mentioned it to me.
My recording tends to be lower because my computer lowers my input volume on purpose in order to maintain good sound quality. But most machines don’t do this so my guests often have an input volume that is louder.
It does require several extra steps to use Levelator and it does occasionally mess up some of the audio, but if it’s a distraction or a problem I’ll start using it again in the new year.
Cool deal. Yeah, Levelator is a couple of extra steps, but not anything major. Export the spoken audio as a WAV file, run it through Levelator, move on from there.
The key is to run spoken word through Levelator. Music is where it becomes problemsome.
Anyway, I wanted to say thank you for taking the time to listen to my request. I like the content of the show and would like to see that become better with time.
Yeah, I used to use it a lot when guests were only an occasional thing. I just hadn’t made it part of my workflow lately, but it’s in the routine now, don’t you worry.
Liked the show, LOVED the ending music!
Glad you liked the music at the end. I put several hours into it one night. The inspiration just hit me.
I’ve had a few more ideas float into my head, but I haven’t had the stroke of inspiration and alone time to get it recorded/edited.
Good episode guys. When’s the band going on tour?
You know, I don’t usually pick up books like Draconomicon, but after hearing your review, I’m actually thinking about getting this one. Sounds like there’s a lot of really useful material there.
