Tome 137: Amethyst Foundations
Jun 15th, 2010 by TheTome
Amethyst Foundations is a sci-fi/fantasy setting that blends technology and magic into a densely detailed and compelling story. There are mechanics to support technology in your 4e D&D game as well as new classes, races, and more. I am joined by Tracy from Sarah Darkmagic as well as Quinn from At-Will.

I’ll have to disagree with some of the critics to this book. I liked the layout and the general organization being different from WotC D&D books. Although Amethyst uses the D&D rules, it’s not D&D, so it should not look like a D&D book.

I think one area that the review portion of this podcast didn’t expound on was the versatility of this book as a tool box. From the old days of running games for me it was always about, if you don’t like it, change it. I could easily see several options with the material included in here. Such as going in a full on modern or sci fi game and (gasp) ditch the fantasy aspect. Another option is to totally ditch the EDF (tech breakage system) and leave the penalty for tech being it’s difficulty to acquire. As tech characters can only get upgrades from one of the Bastion (Techan) cities.
