Chris, you are correct...I'm not sure why they're not showing. I see them all in the back end and they all used to be there...I'll continue looking into it.

For what it's worth, Chris, I always welcome feedback. Sometimes (perhaps due to a lack of vocal inflection) feedback seems hyperbolic and loses some credibility as a result...that's when people start to get defensive and what not.

Personally, there are things that can be done, things that can't be done, and things that could be done but would require a use of resources that isn't likely to happen. I've been doing this long enough (and discuss the topic of podcasting enough) to be aware of much of that.

That said, I still welcome all feedback, even hyperbolic feedback. While specific comments may or may not be something we can/will resolve it does give some general impressions about how to move the show in a positive way. Even the comments that are the most hurtful have positively impacted the show over the years...that's not to say that they might not some day drive the show into cancellation, but I'm a stubborn guy, so it doesn't seem likely any time soon. :-)

Wow! I wish this was the regular show because I don't want to wait an entire month for the next one. What a difference good chemistry makes. The three of you really worked well each other. Each of you bring something a little different to the show. I could hear the passion and excitement everyone had which shows you don't have to rely on editing to put out a good product. My only critique is Randall's levels were too high and voice was 'tinny'. Not sure if that was his mic or the communication channel being used. Jeff sounded great, voice was much cleaner and clear. Please keep them coming like this.

Definitely agreed with everyone here. I am looking forward to where this podcast goes. It might be fun to rope in Chris Perkins or other DMs of note as guests to pick their brains a bit, as well.

Great first show. This format has real potential and off to a nice start. Randall's laugh is infectious. Mike's analytical take is first rate. Jeff seems to have a firm grasp on design. Job well done guys.

Great First Episode--I really like the plan behind this.

I can see a write in your question section fitting in nicely as well as a section on DM Tricks [how to track initiative, how to 'change the board', how to keep players focused, how to order pizza, etc].

Also, I think you have room for a fourth DM & I really think including Chris Heard would be a very good idea--his story telling is first rate & he does a great job of documenting his prep work.

I understood it was RAW but my comments reflected my experience over many episodes. It just happened to be this show that motivated me to write a comment.

For me it isn't just about editing, it's also about equipment. I have a very long commute and listen to many podcasts across a number of genres. I've picked up that using the right equipment goes a long in producing a quality podcast. Using good microphones that work well with your particular voice is the first step. Using the right software and sound processor makes the world of difference. Of course these items cost money and may not be within the budget of what The Tome wants to invest into the show.

All the background noise can be filtered out with the right mics and processors, so all you hear on the feed is clean voices. I've heard some podcasts that use skype and it sounds horrible and other podcasts where the person sounds like they are sitting in a sound studio. Of course this was done by experienced radio guys with high end gear but it demonstrates there are ways to use skype, or facetime, without it sounding like the person is talking through a paper tube.

I'm not trying to be overly critical. I was hoping the comments were taken in the spirit given. If I didn't care about the show, I would just ignore it and move on. However, I get the impression the folks behind the show care and are really trying to put out a solid product. They can't do that unless folks give them feedback.

Give Tome a break on the editing already. It's a FREE podcast. If you paid for it, I'd understand. It's not like their audio is way too low or there is background sound that drowns them out. They give us an 45+ minutes of their time every episode with no cost to us. Yeah there may be a sponsor but we aren't paying the bill. Ease up, it's entertaining and it's free. Thank you for the podcast.

@Dragonhelm: That's fair, and I do appreciate constructive criticism. You're right, I probably could have at least cut that bit, but in the rush to get it out fast (and requests from the internet to do so), I honestly just forgot that part was there. As it was I stayed up late and worked through breakfast to get it out before I left for the day.

I understand the urgency to get this show out, and accept that there may be some flubs due to that. I want to stress that I enjoy the show, and appreciated this discussion.

However, reporting in a timely fashion should not equate to poor production values. It's RAW. I get that. However, a couple of quick edits can make a world of difference. Cutting out the huge pause and the Skype crash would have made this episode that much better, and would not have taken more than a minute or two. It's not like you're editing the whole thing.

Remember, you want to keep your audience engaged in the topic, not in the mistakes. People will accept RAW only up to a point.

Anyway, please accept this as constructive criticism. As I said above, I appreciate your thoughts on 5e and look forward to future coverage.

This episode was unscripted, unplanned, and has all the warts to show for it be it pauses or overly repeated phrases. That's why it's listed as RAW. And I understand the complaints, my suggestion isn't to leave the show, however. If it's that much of a problem, just don't listen to the episodes marked RAW (there are 2 of them in the 5 year history of the show so far). I do that with podcasts, blogs, magazines, etc. all the time, if there's something I'm not interested in, I just don't get those episodes/read those entries.

This was not an episode that could be planned or scripted because we didn't know that the announcement was going to be made. In an effort to get our thoughts, discussion, and ideas out there we grabbed some of the Tome family and did an off the cuff episode on the announcement.

That said, I take all the feedback to heart, don't doubt it and am and will be aware of it going forward. We do plan to continue to cover news of the new edition in the future of the show but since it's not likely to be such big surprise it will likely all be well planned, scripted, and outlined as usual.

On a side note, we were multi-tasking during the episode, we were finding references. When dealing with breaking news like this it's important (to me at least) to be as accurate as possible and in an effort to not mis-state or mis-represent anything we were often looking at the websites and articles we were referencing. Sorry if that was distracting. Again, this is not usually the normal behavior of us or our guests, but for a RAW episode dealing with such a big topic we opted to allow it in an effort to maintain accuracy of reporting in a timely manner.

^Chris: I think a tight outline was sacrificed for the episode to be as timely as possible given the announcement. It is more relevant the day it was released than it will be any other point between now and DDXP, when further news will be revealed. Also, as this was about the host's gut reactions to the news so again, the more they waited the more the show would suffer.

One word made me expect everything your post complained about: Raw. We knew this show would be posted unedited. Just goes to show how far editing can go to tightened up a podcast.

I generally enjoy the podcast but this one almost caused me to cancel my iTunes subscription. You need to pay attention to your own show. Your audience can tell that all of you were multi-tasking. The beep and pops in the background, the keyboards clicking, the awkward pauses and silence, etc. all come through the microphones and tell the audience something else is going on in the background. We become more focused on what else you may be doing rather than what you are talking about. If you can't focus on just the podcast for a single hour, why would you expect a listener to spend an hour of their lives listening to you.

Please do a little more show prep. You all are not that good at riffing, the pauses and silence tell your audience you have no plan on what to talk about next. You need a much tighter and packed show outline. Instead of looking for ways to fill in the time, you should have an almost minute by minute outline so that you are more worried about fitting it all in rather than worrying about how you can pad the time. Your audience will be able to tell the difference. When you are pushed for time, you will have a sense of urgency and energy that will carry in your voice.

I like your insight into the games and believe you have something to offer. I just believe you could take your podcast game up a level with a little more craftsmanship.

I enjoy The Tome Show, it helps me get through the work day. The comments about Pathfinder and GURPS did come off kind of brash but other than that, another good podcast from The Tome Show.

Jeff, are you guys still doing the Tome Book Club? Are you interested in reading along with the WotC Novel Club this month--we are reading City of the Dead which looks like it may be amazing.

For sure, I don't take his word about that as law or anything. I just think it's cool that that's his opinion and he doesn't mind spouting it off. Definitely not a corporate tool. I, for one, wish D&D games were more like actual play. A classic turn based interface might be refreshing.
Anyway, I just finished the first 12 issues of the D&D comic and can't wait for the next book club episode.

I think it's worth noting that Mr. Salvatore is a very knowledgable guy when it comes to writing D&D novels. But his discussion of what 4e was designed to be I interpreted as being his impressions not based on any specialized knowledge he has. He doesn't design games and outside of his editors I don't get the impression that he talks much to people at WotC. So I would take the statement of "4e being designed to sell video games" with a grain of salt. :-)

A little bit too much mic-breathing going on, here. Might wanna keep the microphone further from your face while not talking, or else just clean it up in post-production (assuming you've got separate audio tracks for host and caller).

I thought this was a really great show! I loved how candid Salvatore was about 4e being designed to sell video games and the story of the meeting about why the book had to take place in Neverwinter - great insider perspective. I am an unapologetic Drizzt fan and love to hear R. A. talk about his beloved characters as if they are his friends. I've been lookong for an excuse to buy the DnD comic and I'd really like to participate in the next book club.

Yeah...it doesn't get noted in the interview (due to the linear nature of time and all) but later than night Mike joined us at the Media Meet and Greet gathering at a bar. He didn't drink that much (although it was supremely cool that he came, of all the industry folks that were invited he was one of three that I saw that actually came) but I hear that that was only the first stop on a tour of bars that night. :-)

Tome Show, thanks for posting. Potential listeners can pass on this one. However, if you like people trying to yell over each other, lewd comments and general mayhem this may be for you. I do have to say, lots of people were laughing. I guess you needed to be there. Chris Perkins' live play is usually fun to listen to, but this was poor.

I like what Mike Mearls has to say. I've haven't played D&D since 2nd edition but WotC needs to acknowledge their legacy. There are some many good things from the old editions that could be used in ANY edition! Great work Jeff, Tracy and Sam!

Sonic Legends is awesome! I listened to this podcast a few weeks ago and just downloaded my first track. It is everything I hoped it would be. Thanks for bringing this vendor to my attention. (This is particularly useful because I mostly run games on Virtual Table Top and setting a mood is really difficult with players in five different locations.)

Thanks for the bonus PDF!! Production quality is real good Jeff. The fluff is fun. The illustration is great by Roxxy too. I will let you know how the mosters run when I get a chance to spring them in my game. Thanks again for this surprize Tome Show Bonus.

Abou the Feywild not really fitting in the wheel of worlds, I'd suggest stealing from David Farland's Runelords novel series: the Feywild is the One True World, from where every other world (Elemental Chaos, Astral Domains, Shadowfell or the many, many "prime" Material Worlds) spawned.

In the time before time, there was only one world (or plane)—the Feywild, the One True World. Then the Dawn War hacked it to pieces, creating the whole D&D universe. The present Feywild is a mere shadow of the One True World, an echo of its impossible exuberance.

How about it?

Have played 3 sessions so far on H1 with my group (which is my wife and three boys) We're approaching level 2 - so all this epic tier stuff sounds terrifying and amazing. We're still struggling with a few kobolds at the moment. Will come back and listen again in a few years time!

I think one area that the review portion of this podcast didn't expound on was the versatility of this book as a tool box. From the old days of running games for me it was always about, if you don't like it, change it. I could easily see several options with the material included in here. Such as going in a full on modern or sci fi game and (gasp) ditch the fantasy aspect. Another option is to totally ditch the EDF (tech breakage system) and leave the penalty for tech being it's difficulty to acquire. As tech characters can only get upgrades from one of the Bastion (Techan) cities.

I give the credit to Sam. With him handling editing I spend my time thinking up fun episodes to do and then rather than picking and choosing which ones I have time for I just do them all. :-)

Of course, eventually I'll wear him out and then have to go back to editing myself.

One of the best episodes you've done. Not only has the addition of Tracy to the cast been a great breath of fresh air, this round of crunch with Greg Bilsland made me feel like I was talking D&D shop with friends over a beer. Keep it up!

Thanks for the feedback on the feedback (ha ha). Like I said, it was all largely unedited, so yes, you are right, the audio of this is pretty hard to listen to, I agree completely.

Right now I'm inclined to move forward with the other 5 episodes planned for this month, but if I run into some extra time I can play around a bit and see if I can clean it up a bit.

I suspect some of the problem, however, comes from the equipment that WotC was using as part of the demonstration, since nothing else that I can think of is any different in the way this seminar was recorded or the settings on the file. :-(

Thanks to the Tome crew for posting these. However, the background noise on this was just too much, I could only listen for a few moments.

Just wanted to wish the two new crew members a hearty, "Welcome aboard!". Tracy's presence adds to the show, and the editing was great. Good sound this episode.

I actually got to do the script adaptation for most of the Legend of Huma comic book adaptation for Dragonlance. Those were good times.

Keep up the good work!

Leaving aside the commentary on WOTC for the moment, I was interested to hear everyone's take on the D&D comic.

Personally, I was pretty sceptical about the comic before it launched, and even after buying issue #0 (against my better judgement) I wasn't sure it would be any good.

I've got to say though, that having now just finished issue #3 I think this is a great comic. Sure, it's not going to change the face of comics, but it really is a fun read.

I think that it captures a lot of the feel of a light-hearted, fun session of D&D with friends and is well worth picking up.

Honestly, I'm not as pessimistic as I may have appeared in the episode about WotC. I think they've gone through a patch where they've had a change in direction for the brand and I think there can be strengths and weaknesses to that. But I still hold out hope that they can continue the edition and be successful by putting out great product (that's always the real key, isn't it, put stuff out that people want).

If the D&D brand was sold I would be just fine with that. I feel not specific affinity to Hasbro or Wizards of the Coast specifically. I do have an affinity to the brand of Dungeons and Dragons and be it through WotC or another owner I'm happy so long as the game is going strong.

That said, I don't feel like the products we've seen in the last 6 months are particularly weak. I don't get the impression that the next 6 months will be filled with weak product.

What I do see is that the last 6 months had a change in direction that started a year or two ago in the company and that the next 6 months seems to signal another change in direction for the company. So right now it seems a bit schizophrenic as they try to settle into a new formula.

We certainly live in interesting times, but I said the same thing when 4e was announced and I was filled with a real sense of insecurity then. I have less insecurity now. We'll see what happens. I'm generally not one to jump on the fear-wagon.

Like you mentioned, this setting up for 5E or an end for Wizards D&D. I felt that the Essentials line may have been a last ditch effort for 4E and testing some ideas for 5E. I like 4E, so I am not too happy about this development. However, the steam has run out of 4E and Wizards is needs to make the numbers handed down by Hasbro or more heads will roll. Therefore, these announcements may be a set up for 5E or there be more of the same to come. Then they may sell the franchise and things may heat up again. – The magazine compilation thing is because they are not putting out less and less new content and they do not really have enough for substantial compilations. – Also, wish I went to DDXP and heard the announcements. I am waiting for the reports. – I cannot forget to mention: another great episode!!

I think the compilation of the magazines going away is them trying to screw over people that are planning to let their DDI subscription lapse. Without them people who paid for years of the magazine no longer have access to that content, I wish when I had the DDI I had downloaded them all.

I so glad you guys have said it; for the last two or three months my gaming group and I have been worried about what is going on over at WOTC. They seem to be staggering and bumbling what should be an easy sell...the world's most popular role playing game. Paizo, who I really admire and respect....and may be buying much more of, seems to have the formula down, releasing SEVERAL popular product every month that sell, and are of high quality....I'm speaking as a complete-ist and a gamer of 28+ year....what is WOTC doing.

PS- I can't believe they canceled miniatures!

A podcast that talks about the show and gives good news!!! Welcome Tracy. I have enjoyed listening to you here and on 4 Geeks 4E. Also, congratulations Jeff. My only son is off to college and I miss him (he was my #1 D&D buddy) treasure every moment with these kids while you can.
It is good to keep that habit Jeff of getting two out a month – I believe that discipline has kept this show going and going strong.
Hey, now that RFH is going flat, hope to hear more shows about character optimization.

Thanks for the nice comments guys.

Jon was a blast to talk to and I really liked hearing his take on things. I wish I had more excuses to have him on after this episode.

Oh, and yes, I am a tenacious person...stubborn. Not only am I not going anywhere any time soon, there might be new and exciting things in the works. Stay tuned. ;-)

Great to hear another fine show – Looks like you are going to be the first and last (independent) 4E show. The Power Source has not been on for over a month, Radio Free Hommlet is going on hiatus, Diagonally Through the Woods is all but dead and 4Eish show Lords of Tyre Podcast is out of commission. Long live the King, long live the Tome Show!!!!

Yeah, you're right, Sandy. And that's not the only thing that's missing.

I think it's fair to say that they released the web app earlier than they should have. They shouldn't have put it out until it had equivalent features as the old version of the builder. I understand why they didn't. I wonder if they could have told people WHY there weren't updates coming for a few months and people might have been more understanding.

But I do see the potential in this version of the builder. It can go places the old one couldn't and if they make it feature-complete compared to the old builder within, oh, I'd say two months (February) then I'll be happy.

Time will tell.

One of the biggest hick-ups with the new character builder as far as I see it is the problem around Dark Sun. You can create Dark Sun characters but you can't use inheritant bonuses. A rules suggestion that was stronghly suggested for Dark Sun

The apparently "dead" levels for the hexblade have damage boosts tto either the weapon encounter power (13 & 23) or the escape power (17 & 27).

Actually, it does! I have a clear picture now, and I'm more confident on deciding to buy or not. Thanks a lot!

I don't know if I'd go that far, Marcelo. We liked the City tiles, we just thought that they were limited in use without some of the other sets. I'll be using mine for running some single encounters in cities. But if wanted to do more than a handful of city encounters in a campaign you'd likely start recycling tiles heavily and the environment would become a bit repetative.

So we liked the set, but thought it would be better with the other sets. And the Dungeon set was cooler.

Does that help at all?

So, this episode does not recomend the Dungeon Tiles Master Set: The City, unless one has a copy or two of other Dungeon Tiles about cityscape?

I wanted to shout when you were talking about the Hunter Ranger. I know you were all working on a first impression basis, but the real appeal of the Hunter Ranger is in switching between melee and archery. Previously Ranger powers specified either dex for ranged attacks or str for melee attacks with two weapons, but with MP2, we get a number of powers that use Str for thrown weapons and dex for a few melee attacks. The Hunter build lets you focus on dex and be able to shift between dex-based melee and archery on the fly. Quick Draw is useless for a thrown-weapon-user the second they get a magic weapon, but the combo of Quick Draw and a free-action weapon stow is to shuffle between blade and bow on the fly.

I wanted to chip in about new players vs old players, from a different perspective.

D&D is old now, and old can be cool! By making a fantasy game, you're already "harking" back to old school stuff, and you can get some advantage by being the original version of something. (Even if it's not technically the original version of the game, you can still claim that continuity.)

In other words 12 year olds can like old-school stuff, and I think it's quite clever to gamble on the "intrinsic value" of D&D. Not to say it's the only thing they should try; I say change the box cover every printing, keep things interesting, give a feel of diversity, but I wouldn't want to stop them trying this out, which still looks quite cool, and I say that as someone with no nostalgic association with the original, but totally capable of faking it!

Also there's this concept I've been racking my brains to remember the name of, which is a narrative section put at the front of a system of laws or a treaty in order to explain the motivation for the creation of that law, a narrative element that actually help lawyers in finding parallels etc.

In other words maybe someone that they put in charge of insuring the compendium is clear actually decided to put in something to temper RAW lawyers to understand the intent under which the rules were written, and turn them into a more advanced type of lawyer!

I'm not entirely sure why the file size is extra large this time around. The only thing I've done differently is use my laptop rather than desktop to edit/create the file (due to not being at home at the moment). I wonder if I didn't encode the file at a higher quality this time around, thus creating the extra large file.

If it helps next time I edit with my laptop I'll look into it more carefully and worst case it is a rare occasion, typically, that I edit on my laptop at all.

Thanks for listening to the show!

What's with the filesize? This 'cast is the same length, but it's a full 100mb when you typically come in under 70mb(and I have little space on spare on my phone for podcasts which is why I can never listen to Thursday Knights)

Yeah, I don't think that this change will be like Magic Missile for a few reasons. First, they actually changed Magic Missile in the errata before Essentials came out. And second, these pacts seem to be specifically or the Hexblade build of the warlock, not for the warlock in general. But I'd have to look into it in more detail to see if it could be used to replace old versions of the pacts...but you should still have the options in terms of powers regardless of Essentials or not.

You can do that right now with the first round of Essentials classes, picking powers from previous books. You just have to click a little box that says something like "other sources".

You mentioned how stupid it was that Warlord pacts are named the same in Essentials but are different. Don't forget that when they revealed Magic Missile for Essentials, that version suddenly became the only version that existed in the Character Builder (much to the chagrin of my group's wizards, who had gotten used to the first 4e edition). And they said it was because they didn't want confusion with having two powers with the same name, and didn't want to give the essentials version a different name. Hopefully they've reversed that decision and will indeed allow both versions of pacts to exist.
